# Create your workspace

A workspace holds every customer, contact, onboarding, and task your team works on. One workspace per company is the right answer for most teams. Spin up a second workspace only when two brands or business units don't share teammates and shouldn't see each other's data.

## Walk through it

1. **Open the signup flow.** Go to [app.pivotal.app/start](https://app.pivotal.app/start) and sign in with your work email. The first person to sign up at a given email domain becomes the Owner.
2. **Name the workspace.** Use the name your team will type when they search for you in email, slack, and the portal URL. Acme Corp, not "Acme CS Q3 trial".
3. **Pick a slug.** The slug becomes `yourname.pivotal.app/portal`. Lowercase, hyphens, no spaces. You can change it later under **Admin > Workspace settings > General**, but old portal links will break for 24 hours while the redirect propagates.
4. **Set the time zone.** Task due dates, Ask Pi's "summarize today", and the activity feed all roll up on this clock. Pick your CSM team's timezone, not the customer's.
5. **Confirm the owner.** The Owner role can add other admins, transfer ownership, and delete the workspace. You can switch it later from **Admin > Team**.
6. **Save.** Pivotal lands you on an empty Workbench. From here, [invite your team](/product/setup/invite-your-team) or [add your first customer](/product/customers/add-a-customer).

## Fields under the hood

| Field | What it controls | Notes |
| ------------------------ | ---------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| `name` | Display name in nav, email, portal | Editable any time. 60 char max. |
| `slug` | Portal URL and API references | Editable. Old slug 301s for 24h. |
| `time_zone` | Due dates, Pi summaries, feed timestamps | IANA format (`America/New_York`). |
| `owner_id` | The Owner seat | One per workspace. Transferable. |
| `default_phase_template` | Phases new onboardings inherit | Set later under [Phase templates](/product/onboardings/phase-templates). |

## The gotcha most teams hit

If you sign up with a personal Gmail and your teammates sign up with their company email, Pivotal treats those as two workspaces. Sign up first with your work email, then invite teammates from there. If you already created the wrong one, email [help@pivotal.app](mailto:help@pivotal.app) and your team can merge the workspaces before either of you imports customers.
